OUR OTHER ACTIVITIES
Much work has been done over the years by Society members to ensure the preservation of the history of Verwood in oral, written, photographic and tangible form. Help with any aspect of this is warmly welcomed.
PHOTOGRAPHS
We hold a very extensive collection of prints and slides of past pictures of
the town. A modern
collection has been started recording the present
changes in the area on photograph and video.
SLIDE
SHOW
The Society has compiled a slide show "Heathland Heritage" with sound and
commentary which can be shown to local organisations
on request.
POTTERY
A large collection of Verwood pottery was been
brought back to the town several years ago when such pieces were rare in the
locality. It is vested in the Town Council with Verwood
Historical Society as Trustees.
In addition the Society owns several pieces
of its own which have been donated or bought over the years.
Lately, Verwood Pottery has acquired a "collector's" value.
ARTEFACTS
A number of other artefacts relating to the
history of the town, including bricks, books, signs etc. have been
collected.
RECORDS
Copies have been made of census records of the parish from 1841 to 1901. Parish register entries have also been copied. Some of these are currently online for local and family history researchers.
In addition, newspaper reports, school log books, minute books, tithe apportionments and many other items have been copied. Volunteer computer typists are always welcomed to help us with this ongoing task.
MEMORIES
The memories of some of the older residents
have been recorded. These include general reminiscences and specific
occupations.

FAMILY HISTORY
Through the above we have been able to help many people whose ancestors
lived in Verwood and are willing to assist genealogists
in whatever way we can.
EXHIBITIONS
We have held several successful exhibitions
over the years. Some of our displays are currently on show in the
Heritage Centre and in the cabinet in Verwood Library.
SCHOOLS
We have a good relationship with the local
schools and support the teachers in whatever they require to fulfil the National
Curriculum. The Local
History on our web pages gives information and photographs useful to school
projects.
